Is there a more covert way to obtain this information?

If the person has a DD214 (seperation papers) then that will verify service. Also, if they have ever filed a claim for VA benefits, then they can get the VA to verify military service. If you are trying to find the info out on someone else without them knowing, then these options will not be of service. Sometimes, if you search enough with Google using the vet's name, unit, location, or any other "info" you may have, you might find something somewhere. Its a hard search but sometimes it works.

All you need to verify a claim of military service is a DD form 214.

I agree with everyone else: Ask for copy of the DD214 to the person.

If you want to conduct a background check on someone, (discreetely), there are ways in which you can do so online, but not for free.

They need to show you their DD Form 214. That form is proof of veteran status. This discharge form is used by all when they get discharged and it shows the level of discharge (Honorable/General/Dishonorable)

Umm, the person would have a DD214 and their discharge certificate. If you ask them to see their DD214 and they have no idea what you are talking about, then they didn't serve.
