It can be left out for quite a while - depending on the temp of the room (in the summer months when it's warmer, it'll go bad faster), cleanliness of the container that you put it in, where you keep it ie, in the sun isn't good. Keep it in an air tight container - air causes oxidation which will lead to rancidity. You'll know when it starts to go bad - it starts to smell rancid and mold will develop fast. Butter usually will not separate so there won't be any liquids on top. If you're not going to use a whole stick or are slow at using the whole thing, cut it in half and return the unused portion to the fridge to keep it fresh longer.

Don't leave out for long periods of time. Like days. In fridge it's good through everyday use.
