What is your definition of Medical Malpractice?

If the doctor is suppose to (lets say) do heart surgery. he leaves a tool or a gauze inside your chest. months later you have a major blood clot and die. thats medical malpractice

I work for a doctor and that is a hard question to be honest. From my personal view though most malpractice would happen during a surgery....slipped and cut another organ...cut wrong limb off (mostly unheard of nowadays).
In one answer you got, was mentioned "dismissal" of complaints. Maybe some doctor has done that, but you would be surprised out how hard it is to get the "true" story out of a patient when they get to a doctors office. Or they are prescribed a medicine and told to return in 2 weeks to re-evaluate and never show back for 5 months...then they get bad..whose fault is that?
Had a pt sign in at desk, said nothing, just went and sat down. I asked if he was back about an injury he had suffered the week before when I came up front...he said no, I got a wasp sting. I asked Are you allergic to them? THEN he says yes....well duhhh...by time we got him back to our office ER he was almost at point of death. Someone could of sued saying we let a patient die for lack of prompt attention but you see our side of what actually happend.
A 38 y/o alcohol comes to office saying, I want to just get a new Rx for my stomach meds....someone had put them on him long time before......months later he comes to ER, c/o elbow hurting, chest hurting, stomach hurting etc....heart test ok at that time....then his breathing got bad and he was shipped out...now suing the doctor because he had treated him for stomach problems.......never came to doctor on a regular basis...once that time just for a new Rx for his "stomach meds he took".....figure that one
