if you are a begginner, sorness is a sign that muscles are working, but you should not work them again until the soreness is gone. Soon, your body will adapt and you will not be in so much pain after lifting.

Depends on what you did and the intensity. It is true that you do not want to work the same muscle groups two days in a row but doing a strength workout one day and cardio the next is okay. In fact, light to moderate cardio after a strength day can actually relieve some soreness.

Example: If you worked your leg muscles on monday and expirience some soreness on tuesday, you will probably feel better with some time on the bike or just walking around. Not real high intensity though.

IF you are expiriencing pain to the point of not wanting to move at all, you may have injured yourself and should go see a doctor.

Yes you can you could end up pulling muscles or tearing something. Its most important when you are working out to build up. Don't start off lifting way too much weight or running too far/long, work up to it! This is how you build strength and endurance. Start off small then every week add 10 or 5 lbs to your weight, run and extra 5 or 10 minutes. This way you are less likely to pull something and hurt yourself, and you will be able to get the results you want more efficently! Don't kill yourself at the gym, if it feels like that, then your doing it wrong.

i didnt think it was adviseable to workout two days in a row anyway, your muscle tissue hasn't fully repaired itself yet. i dont think you build new muscle if you work out twice within a 24 hour period.
but i dont think you should avoid working out just because you're sore, because thats kind of lame. no pain no gain. but soreness is your body's way sending subtle messages, so if for example you do a lot of lunges in the gym with heavy weights and your knees are always sore the next day, you should probably back off and figure out what's going on.
