Why is it, trainer's and us all are told or even read that puppies dont remember within like 2 seconds what they did/done wrong, so not to reprimand them if isn't caught at that exact moment...right?
So, how come I have gotton as many "treats" out of my coat pocket the same amount of times I have taken my dog out for potty, he knows when I go to my coat and in my pocket that I have a treat for him.....but yet, he doesnt remember that going outside is ok, and going inside is not ok...
Hmmmm....I wonder.
Am I thinking this all the wrong way? Do you all understand what I'm trying to say, lol.

it's not so much the memory of there being food in your pocket as there has consistantly been food in your pocket. this is why consistancy in training works so well. if your dog knows each time what's going to happen, then yes they will remember. if your dog pees on the carpet and hours later you drag the dog over to the pee, it does not associate peeing in that spot with you taking it to the pee. if that makes sense. the dog knows each time you have a treat in your pocket. but if you're not watching your pup and it's allowed to potty on the floor and you don't catch it every single time, then it will not associate the two. because sometimes you did not notice it. glad you're using a crate, and keep up with the potty training.

The coat would appear to mean "treats" to your dog.
You have a puppy. Just like a human baby who learns to be potty trained, so will your puppy become house trained. A human does not figure it out the first time, or the second time, or even the third. It takes a lot of positive reinforcement and repetition for an animal, or a human, to understand that a normal bodily function CAN be controlled...and that there are appropriate places to pee, and inappropriate ones.
Be patient.

Dogs are MASTERS at reading body language, that is what your dog is doing.
The 3 second rule is about marking behavior, not about memory. If your dog sits, and you say "good job!!!", and then he is jumping all over you and you give him a treat, you are rewarding him for jumping on you. The "good boy" is also a reward, but not nearly as strong a reward as food. You need to reward/correct when the behavior happens, not after the fact.

Because urinating and fecating are involuntary actions as a pup until they get better control over their bodies but treats are a lot different. That's why if you only do treats when housebreaking when they actually go potty, they associate it better together.

Not that I used to feed "treats" to my kids (I used to teach preschool), but it is the same with them. I guess dogs are like human beings in that aspect. Like us, they only want to remember the best things in life that are best for them. If it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with how others feel, it doesn't make sense to a dog. That's why the reward system is discouraged for children. It doesn't make them realize the right thing on their own. And that's why treats are for dogs.

It isn't that they don't remember, they can not make the association between something they did 10 minutes ago and a scolding now.

I get what your saying. Have you tried using a voice command with it. Like "go potty". That seems to help.
