they're so long. they would look wierd on a normal window

You can definitely do that. That's why most drapes come so long, so that they'll fit really tall windows but also anyone can trim them to the length they want to fit all sizes of windows.

Sometimes drapes come with an iron-on adhesive tape that you can use to hem them to the length you want. If yours didn't come with that, you can buy it at a fabric store. Then you just measure and cut the curtains to the length you want, fold over the cut edge on the bottom, and iron this tape on so that it locks the fold and prevents the cut edge from fraying.

You can cut them and hem them with a sewing machine or tape (buy it at a fabric store), or return them for the proper size. Or, just move the rod closer to the ceiling until the curtains are at the proper length, if that's an alternative. You can also just puddle them on the floor, very chic these days.

Before you buy any curtains or drapes, you should have measured them and chose the length you wanted.

Yes! If you cut them in the store before you buy them, you will make a lot of enemies.
