My sons have had "girlfriends" since kindergarten. I'm finding when children state they have a girl/boyfriend it's more of a crush scenario than the actual thing. It's their way of saying, I really like this person. I've also noticed that when one of my sons has a girlfriend their behavior is the same as if they were just friends. The only difference is they chase/run away from each other a considerable amount more. It's all rather cute.

Some little girls of a certain age count a boy a boyfriend if he is nice to her. It is the same with boys. So no your friends are not lying to you. It may just be that you view a boyfriend as something more than a boy that is nice to you on the playground. It can happen anywhere not just in small towns.
I remember when I was 3 or 4 there was this one little girl in my play group that I said was my girlfriend because we ate at the same table every day at lunchtime.

Your friends are totally lying. Girls do that. When I was in school, I thought all my friends had boyfriends and they were doing all the stuff they said they were doing. Turns out, they were lying and just saying what everyone else was saying so they weren't left out. Don't do anything, boyfriend or sex wise, until you're ready. The girls putting out at an early age will live to regret it. Take my word. Focus on school and let the bf thing happen naturally and go by your own timetable, not anyone else's.

I think elementary kids may have been highly enamored thoughts a lot of other children. The other child most likely did not feel anything at all. Call it a one way crush if you will. I remember a few of these. However in sixth grade I was the surprised receiver of a kiss from a girl you only see on soaps in the afternoon.

Yes, small towns tend to have more boyfriends at younger ages. But also, you can't technically count 3rd and 4th grade relationships - they're probably more like that "hi wanna be my girlfriend?" "ok" kinda thing.
I think REAL boyfriends are when you're a bit older, like high school, etc.

Boyfriends in 3rd or 4th and especially in the high school are made to be broken up...usually and anyways, how can you have boyfriends in the 3rd or 4th grade? They're more like boys who are friends with them

It may be true... in small towns parents can know a families history (3 generations back LOL) and everyone knows everyone. So parents are a little more relaxed about letting their little girl say the boy next was her boyfriend. Even thou it probably only amounted to an ice cream date at most.

I think they mean they had BOYS who were Friends, not really boyfriends. I think in smaller towns that are isolated, yeah they probably do things a little faster than most. Geez at 3rd and 4th grade I was still playing tag and riding bikes! Lots of boy/friends! But not the kissing and googling type...I think your friends are forgetting when their boyfriend experience really took place... :)

Small towns have boyfriends when they are young. Most parents dont care and think it is cute. I had a "boyfriend" in 5th grade. i dont know why they call it that though because you dont go out, and you arent or shouldnt be kissing or other stuff when you are that young. I didnt at least. Most people at my school had their little gf and bf in 1st and 2nd grade.

They are probably not lying. When I was in Elementary school we did that. Except for me it was 5th grade. when I was in 5th grade the 5th graders last year had bfs and gfs in like 4th grade but they were weird......trust me i remember those people. and they were like serious....like making out..but that actually wasnt til 6th grade for them. I don't think they are lying. cuz i was in a REAL small town. and well thats what happened. So i dont think they are lying. but they could be.
