I Know a couple of people who have different IM programs. I was wondering if there is a single one that works with all, or even if they're all universal.

No, however there is a website that lets you sign in many different instant messangers at the same time. The adress of the website is meebo.com. Also a hint, MSN and Yahoo Messanger contacts could be added to each others, and AIM is seperate. But use meebo.com to sign in all at the same time and its really helpful.
