I had my first cigarette when I was 6. Lets just say someone I trusted at that age gave it to me. I didn't have another until I was 10, my uncle gave me that one. I am now 37 and have been pretty much smoking for 27 of those years. I have attempted quitting on several occasions to no avail. I can go without my other vices(I was hooked on cocaine for awhile) but I can not give up cigarettes.

I started just to try it, see what it was like. Had my first cigarette, felt kinda sick afterwards, but then I felt kinda euphoric (not like a high, barely perceptible, probably as a side-effect of a little oxygen deprivation and the action of the nicotene). I had binge eating disorder at this time, and when I smoked I didn't have the urge to gorge myself anymore. One addiction replaced another and I lost about 240 pounds over a period of 5 years.

i am unable to name one positive to smoking
i am a smoker
i started smoking weed at the age of 18, i then moved on to harder and harder drugs, i never took heroin but was close.
when i was 22 i was a regular user of cocaine (10 gramms a week) ecstacy (25 - 30 pills a week) and canabis (1-2 ounces a week) on my 23rd birthday i realised that enough was enough and knocked ll the drugs on the head, i decided that the only drug i should use was alcohol
it all went well untill 3 days in i cracked and started smoking again
since then i have only smoked ciggys and drank other than tha im off the drugs
im telling you this story in this subject to emphasize one point
of all the drugs i have done, of all the drugs i have taken, there is only one i now cannot go without...
ciggarettes
they are awfull, taste bad, and will kill you
dont ever think you wont get hooked on just one, you will, dont start and definatly dont think you can stop easily

Smokers feel that cigarettes calm their nerves. After a meal when you feel stuffed and miserable a cigarette can ease that discomfort. I know that cigarettes are a stimulant and therefore should not have nerve calming properties, but the effects on the brain can be slightly euphoric which can ease unpleasant feelings. We all KNOW its bad for us but we choose to do it anyway, we dont need non-smokers cramming anti-tobacco propoganda down our throats, all it does is irritate us, and it wont make us quit. I smoke, but I do not smoke in my home or my car. I only smoke outside, I try to have respect for non-smokers, but those of us who do smoke deserve that same respect in return. We dont need to hear how unhealthy or unattractive it is, the truth is we really dont care. We know the facts, we made the choice, let us be.
And to everyone else who has answered this question, Im not stupid and I dont want to die, most people start smoking long before they are legally able, when they are teenagers who just want to fit in, or rebel. Smoking is very addictive, if you have never done it you have no right to judge those of us who do. It makes you more ignorant than we are for continuing to do something that is harmful.

I started smoking (35years ago) to look cool, hang with the big kids. Now it's just a nasty habit I cant quit.
There is NO positive effect other than quelling a nicotine fit. If you haven't started ,DON'T! It's easier not to start, than it is to quit !

They smoke because they started on to it to look mature, impressive and macho. But once addicted they become sick, regressive and addicts and with scarcely an escape route save will-power, determination and courage--an antithesis to smokers---which in anycase they lack in abundance !!
Positive effect--well there is definitely one ; they are doing good to the tobacco growers and manufacturers--a case of self-sacrifice for other fellow humans and doctors to do research on their sick bodies for benefit of posterity !!Hail their benevolence!!

becaus ethey are addicted to the nicotine in the cigarette.
there is no possitive effect it can have on u, if u get a good feeling when ur high, that doesnt count because you're still getting lung cancer and emphazema when u inhale the smoke into ur lungs.
