I have selective Mutism and I am pretty sure of it. I have just learned about it. I still have it now and I'm 15 and had it since I could ever remember(like before Elementary.) But what really hurt me is that my third grade teacher thought I couldn't speak English and that is my first language. I never knew until my mom told me. My mom doesn't even know about this condition and wouldn't take it seriously like many people. So I don't think any therapist could help since I don't want my mom to think I'm crazy or whatever. So what I'm asking for is a website where other teenagers and up have Selective Mutism and parents who experienced this can talk to me about it. I think thats the most comfortable way of helping me. Chat, e-mail, something safe and free, whatever. I just need to be understood.

Selective mutism is pretty rare--I work at a mental health agency, we have thousands of clients and we have had only one client with selective mutism. Try and see a doctor; you might have some anxiety that can be treated with medication.

Are you sure you actually have Selective Mutism? At any rate, here is a website you can go to for more info www.selectivemutism.org and that is only one of many. I really hope you find the help you need and want. I can also tell you that when I was growing up, it was thought that I might have SM, but it turns out I just had/have Social Anxiety Disorder, which could be what you have. I'm not trying to diagnose, just offering another suggestion.

http://www.selectivemutism.org/ or http://www.selectivemutismfoundation.org/ are good places to start.

Selective mutism is related to social anxiety disorder and it's a good idea to seek help from others who understand. These two websites have a lot of information and you might want to find some parts that you could print out for your mom to read to help her understand what you are going through.

Go to any of the novels that take place in the late nineteenth century like... oh say a Dickens novel. The character he sometimes uses in the background is a mute. Seldom do authors explain how life is divided into two groups .The winner-players and the loner-givers. You need to accept your group. Now find others in it. Then learn the second vocabulary of the winners and your life will be a terrifying experience everyday as you see yourself rejected by the other group in their language. No wonder you avoid them. I do too. In my mutation I was given very poor musical talent but I dont get balsted for that. I get shunned for other reasons . Random mutation is mostly from radiation from the sun but selective mutation is from the gods and the angels. Usually a selective mutation is used to perpetuate some ability rather than a lack of ability in a human or animal. The mutation leading to Mutism is very rare. I still have a messenger name of a girl who is mute but can hear. If you wish it. I cant put it in here so PM me.

Hi,
If the problem is due to your weakness in the spoken English language, it is not selective Mutism.
I haven't come across SM websites for teenagers. There is one forum that provides a platform for communication with plenty of good advices and comforting words at http://www.childhoodanxietynetwork.org/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/. Best wishes!

Your problem stems from your need to be different. There is, in fact, nothing wrong with you, other than your need to stand out, which is normal for your age group. Wait a few years, and you'll outgrow this need. Hope this helps.
