just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how i could try to get my dog to sleep outside without barking, we have only just got her and the first night we put her in the laundry because we did'nt have a kennel, but my dad hates the smell and wants her to sleep outside. The problem is when she was in laundry half the night she would scratch at the door, wanting out. i got up once to try and calm her, but then just ingorned her the rest of the night. i was jsut wondering if it will be worse when she is put outside. like will she bark and stuff if so how can i stop her from doing that?

i know its hard to understnd why we got the dog, but it was kinda a surprise to all of us! a man was going to put her down because he was not allowed to keep her in the nursing home so we decided that we would keep her. We are keeping her outside because we have a cat and its very terrtioral and vicous at times, when it sees the dog is inside, we want try to get our cat slowly used to the dog seeing as though it has had some bad experiences with them so we thought it would be best if it sleept outside sometimes. its a english cocker spaniel, and we have a very big yard

Sorry, but I belive a dog should be an inside pet, part of the family. Banishing her to the laundry room her first night in a new house was probably very traumatic for her. Wanting to put her outside to sleep is only going to make her "smell" worse when or if she is allowed to come inside. Bathe her, allow her to be outside when she wants to go out, if she is allowed to stay inside, she shouldn't smell at all.
Why do people get dogs and keep them outside is beyond me. A dog that is allowed to become a part of the family and not a yard dog will provide more protection and loyalty. Maybe your dad should consider getting an alarm system installed if he got the dog for protection because I can't understand any other reason why someone would get a dog and keep it outside to sleep.

First of all, what breed of dog is she? Some breeds can be outside dogs just fine but others can not. Also, where do you live? If you live in a warm climate it might be ok. But even then your dog may be in danger of fleas, mosquitos which carry heart worm, or even other dangerous animals. Personally, I hate the idea of dogs being kept outside all the time or even just at night. She should be a member of the family. Its obvious thats what she wants too by the way she scratches on the door. You just got her so of course she is insecure and scared. Putting her outside is going to make it worse. If she smells, give her a bath. You can't expect to have a dog only on your (or your dads) terms. You have to consider what is best for the dog even if it is not having one if you can't give her what she needs. Good luck.

It's downright cruelty to take this elderly dog away from the only home she has ever known and then tie her outside alone. No wonder she is barking! Cocker spaniels, in particular, are "people dogs" and never intended to live outside. If you can't take her in the house and show her the love and compassion she deserves, then take her to a rescue or a shelter where she can get a decent owner who will love and appreciate her.

i think maybe you could get her some sort of stuffed animal toy or a blanket or something she can sleep with :) let her get used to it and play with it and it'll become a sort of security to her. maybe you could let her sleep inside for a few days with the toy/blanket/whatever and then try putting her outside with the same toy. get her one of those doggy beds and make sure she has food and water outside too in case she gets hungry or thirsty. that way she won't have to bark and scratch at the door if she wants food.

also, the first couple nights you could try waking up a few times in the night to check on her and to reassure her that all is well. i know it sounds like a lot of work but usually when people get dogs - the first few weeks are rough. don't worry i'm sure you'll figure something out though! good luck! :)

Maybe it would have been better for her to have been put to sleep. it is cruel to be keeping this little dear outside or by her self shut in a room . Cocker spaniels are very social dogs and like to be with people. try taking her to the groomers and getting her clipped and bath so she dosent stink and letting her stay in your room at night . Get her a dog bed and let her sleep in it on the floor by your bed. She will never be happy being alone please do what is best for the dog . Good luck.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/nuwH0

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Use a lemon spray bark deterrent. it is a collar that has a sensor in it for vibrations when the dog barks. Bark-squirt.
It is really pricey, but so are noise violation fines.
I just have to ask, why get a dog to leave it outside.I don't understand having a companion animal to leave it outside. Was there no knowledge that animals have odors prior to acquiring her. I sure hope there is adequate housing for the dog.

Your dad should never have a dog .You need tolerance ,patience, kindness, understanding ,ask your dad if he would like to sleep outside. She needs attention and security she is in a strange place away from her mother and siblings, most of all she needs love.Take her to training classes, the problem is with your dad and not the dog, bath her every month to keep her sweet smelling, groom her everyday.Ask your dad if she can stay indoors ,in the laundrey room its safe and warm, use fresh air spray, open a window for fresh air to circulate, put her bed in there with a soft blanket and a cuddly toy, bless her .Do not forget her water bowl and make sure she does her ..............!At bedtime.Buy a puppy book.O.K.She is 9 years old BUT.,she is still in a strange place away from her usual territory, don't ask to much of her if she is 9 years old.She is stressed out ,do you want to keep her?If so you all need to make more effort !She is not a member of your family at this stage. You need to bond with her.She has had a bad time try to show your love ,this is the reason you rescued her ,she needs to see a physical demonstration of your love ,cuddles, fuss, long walks, playing,Show her.

test it first, but if she is an inside dog breed, and wasnt meant for the outside, you made a bad decision of getting a dog, you can't really keep a dog from barking unless you pay for the surgery or a bark collar, the most humane bark collar would be the one that sprays a scent instead of the shock one.
