Can I find such a place in the San Fernando Valley, maybe around the intersection of Sepulveda and Ventura Blvd? How about in the Venice area? I am not that concerned about crime. What would be the minimum lease term? I would like 6 months in case I decide that LA is not for me and need to split.

A cheap alternative to Venice would be Palms/Culver City or Mar Vista. Crime is not really an issue in any of these areas and they are all super close to Venice. I know that there are studios & 1 bdrms in these areas from $650-$1000/month. Westsiderentals.com is probably your best bet for apt. searches.

Im sure you can find many places for that amount. I think in the valley you can even get something nice for $800. The lease is usually 1 year but all places are different some are month to month. Deposit is usually about one months rent too so if you break the lease you'll loose you deposit. Venice might be more pricey since it's near the beach.

You MIGHT be able to get something for that price somewhere, but probably not in Venice, and not near Sepulveda and Ventura. You can find somthing for that price in Glendale, possibly Burbank or Tujunga. Further away in the Inland Empire, you can find a nice place for that amount in Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, etc.

*Sigh* Another one.

Okay, here goes:

You MIGHT find a studio in the Valley for that price, but certainly not a one bed, least not in area you'd want to live in. Highly unlikely in Venice.

Not that many places require a lease.

Try Craigslist.

Not that concerned about crime? Ha ha, that's a good one.

Check www.CraigsList.org.

You can find a studio in Venice and a 1 bedroom in the Valley.

The lease terms depend on the landlord, but subletting here is very easy if you get locked into a year's lease.
