They represent transformation because they spend most of their lives as aquatic nymphs before forming a coccoon and transforming into an airborne dragonfly (like how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly)

i don't think they stand for very long, very active little creatures difficult to photograph.
they must stand for some kind of majick as they are associated with faerys and elves and such.
