When I used to shave my head i'd clip it down with a hair shaver then to get it skin close i'd go over it again with my leg razor in the shower. I miss those days :\

If it's longish, start with scissors and hack it down as short as you can. Don't worry about even-you're shaving your head anyway.
Get some clippers - decent ones - this is not a job for sissy tools. Take it as close to the scalp as you can.
They make clippers specifically for shaving your head. Wahl is best - they make a Balding Clipper - but there are less expensive models. Sally Beauty Supply.
Then you go for it with a razor if necessary. Get someone to help, because you can neither see nor reach the back of your head.
For under 10 bucks, you can probably have someone at your local chain salon buzz it down to the scalp for you.
