My biggest problem with her is her ears. It never lays nicely. Is there a shampoo that will help to show off that georgeous coat of hers. I have rarely seen such a beautiful retriever. If only I could show it. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks for your time

I just use a good quality puppy shampoo and comb through gently as I am drying, a raw egg now and then in the meal is good for the coat, I can't think what else but I know each dog is different and perhaps she just has her own personality, and likes to be a tomboy!

I have two Labs that are outside dogs. I keep their coat looking good by feeding them a good quality dog food (Canidae) and a weekly brushing. I bathe them about once a month or more if needed. Other than that I occasionally give them raw eggs, Flax Seed Oil and Cod Liver Oil.

It's not recommended to bathe them frequently, because it eliminates their waterproofing agents and tends to tarnish the skin. When you do bathe her, take care not to get shampoo in her eyes and ears. The Retrievers have droopy ears which are breeding grounds for bacteria. Moisture in the ears will certainly cause ear infections.

Is she having fun when she's scruffy? What does it matter. Its not like its affecting her hygene or anything. If you want a show dog get a poodle not a retriever being and looking silly is in their personality. Its like trying to put a tomboy in a dress. good luck with that. She knows she's beautiful and she's ok with that. And Im sure when you wake up in the morning with morning breath she doesnt go online and ask a question like "how can i make my owners breath smell better? Shes like a boy in the morning". Dogs are pals, not furry dolls.

I'm sorry but I just don't get how having a scruffy coat makes you say she is acting like a boy. You are talking about her fur, not her actions. If you have bedhead one morning does that mean you are acting like a boy? I'm sorry but I don't get the analogy here.
As far as making her coat look nicer you could try bringing her to groomer. As far as shampoos go you would prob just have to try them till you got the desired effect.

A high quality, well balanced diet will do wonders for the coat alog with a professional grooming. Go to the groomer with your dog -watch and aks questions. You'll be doing your own grooming in no time.

You could shampoo her with shapmoo your vet recomends, or bring her to a groomer who will do a long lasting nice job on her. You most likey need to do the following thing to help maintine your dogs coat:

1.Brush her daily
2.Comb her too
3.Bathe her weekle
4.Trim her fur

P.s if shes a puppy shes just playing and getting messy dont be so hard on her!!

Goodluck!

I know just how you feel. I have a beautiful springer spaniel, but she just will not take care of herself! She drags her ears through her food, rolls around on the floor, runs instead of walking sedately. The worst is that she drools when she gets too hot. I tell her that people are going to think she's a dog! She just laughs.
