The Suburb of Atlanta that isin't the hood is Riverdale that is the most affordable good 3bed room and 4 bedroom houses are $80,000-$100,000 here as opposed to $150,000-$200,000 in other neighborhoods. Mostly hardworking black families and educated single people move to Riverdale.

A little "lighter" suburb with the mix of Riverdale prices and the diversity of a typical Suburb are Morrow, Stockbridge and Mc Donough are all like 5-10 minutes out of the Atlanta city limits with housing prices from the $100,000's to $150,000's. Popular suburbs right now for people of color are east of the city in Stone Mountain, Lilburn and north of the city in Gwinett county which is still being developed but "feels" suburban and has the best schools in the state but is 30 minues north of the city and the traffic can be bad in Atlanta if you don't leave for work before about 6:30-7am. Anytime after 7am you can expect to be in a traffic jam for about 45 minutes to an hour on any freeway in Atlanta.

A good apartment here you can expect to pay $600 for a 1 bedroom, $750 for a 2 bedroom and $825 for a good 3 bedroom. You can find cheaper but the more hood you get. There are more expensive but these prices are about right for a middle of the road apartment community but closer to nice than hood.

Parts of Decatur are nice just depends on what your looking for. House? Apartment? A lot of the really inexpensive areas are either really far from the city (aka Riverdale is an hour or so from Atlanta) or they are dangerous neighborhoods (violence, shootings, drugs etc). Stone Mountain has a few inexpensive areas too.

Your expectations aren't any further extreme, they are sensible for really really everybody who needs to stay and raise a kinfolk in a unprecedented, protect area. truly the more advantageous effective neighborhoods are all north of the city. cities like Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Marietta, Smyrna, Lawrenceville, Duluth. Certain areas of East Point is inexpensive (by Atlanta standards)...also some areas of Decatur, but you have to be careful there. Doraville's a pretty nice area, and has SOME inexpensive areas. Chamblee used to be nice, but nowadays is referred to as "Chambodia".
