my 8 month old Rottweiler has been diagnosed with hip displasia. Although I am not accepting this info. My question is this: if he has it on his right side, why does he favor his left? And sometimes doesnt put much weight on the left side? Shouldnt he favor the right? And isnt he too young to truly tell this disease? As far as I know the breeder shows no signs from parents....please help. I am giving glucosamin, nyzmes and metacam per my Vet (also pepcid each day)....thank you

The only way dysplasia can be diagnosed is by x-rays..it can NOT be diagnosed by manual manipulation.

No he isn't too young to have dysplasia..the only way to know if his parents didn't have dysplasia is if they had testing done (x-rays ) a responsible breeder wil lhave hips x-rayed and certified through OFA/PennHip BEFORE breeding and will also research the pedigree to see that health testing has been done & passed by others in the pedigree as well. Hip dysplasia doesn't always present with signs this is why health testing is vitaly important to a responsible breeding program.
If he was x-rayed and he does have hip dysplasia it will throw the whole joint system off, so you will notice differences on the opposite side.

If you bought your puppy from a responsible breeder they should guarantee against hip dysplasia since it is an inherited defect.

*****DNA tests have nothing to do with Hip Dysplasia*****

Ask the breeder if the parents were health tested. This means that a vet did tests and sent them to different places for scores. Normally, if scores do not come back at a specific level, it is ill-advised to breed the dog. Because it is genetic, they parents might not be showing it, but doesnt mean they dont both carry the gene for dramatic hip displaysia.

An 8month old pup is nearly full grown. The bones have pretty much reached full potential, so therefore he is not to young to have hip problems. It is very common in rottweilers, and large breed dogs in general, unfortunately. You could opt for surgery if the vet feels it would be a success.

Try using human-grade glucosamine. Go to Target, or which ever local pharmacy and pick up a bottle of Glucosamine Hydrosulfate and Chondroitin Supplements. There is more of the mineral in each of the human supplements than in each of the dogs', so it would be more effective. And cheaper!

If you are unhappy with what this vet says, perhaps get a second opinion or seek out a dog chiropractic specialist who would know the most there is about dogs with HD.

Sorry about your Lil friend. However, it can be diagnosed at a young age. If they have a shimmy type of walk, it could be either a spinal problem, or most likely displasia. Also, Rottweilers are prone to this disease. My co-worker has 2 and 1 has the disease. Luckily, yours was caught early and has a good chance of living a good life, provided you continue the glucosamine. Also, the dog foods that say it is in it, there isn't enough. Don't bank on the food.
Also, exercise the dog.It will build muscle and pull the joints out so they aren't rubbing badly. Not too much, your dog will be your meter. As you shouldn't over exercise, as that can ruin bone growth and cause more damage.
Good luck and don't give up. My sister has a Border collie that was diagnosed young, she thought that she was going to have to euthanize him, Doctor is now 5yrs old, exercised and very happy. He has good days more than bad days. He lets her know.
Take care and enjoy the adventure of dog companionship!

Yes, your dog can/does have hip dysplasia at 8 months. They can get it at any age, and actually fortunately for you, there is still a chance you can have it operated on at an early age and give your dog a good quality of life.

If you don't have the surgery now, you will have to wait until your dog is about 7 or 8 years old to have the surgery.

do believe your vet, do continue giving your dog the suplements, and do ask about further xrays for other bone joint disorders such as "Panostitis" and "Osteo Chondritis Dysicans" ... this could explain some of the inconsistancies you are seeing.

also, young dogs don't always show signs of pain from joint disorders, they just ignore their pain, and continue to play, and they won't feel it until later when they are resting or the next day.

Hope this helps!

Just because the parents didn't show signs of the disease doesn't mean they weren't carriers of it. Hip displasia is a genetic recessive disease. This is the main reason that I tell people NOT to buy a puppy from anyone if the proper genetic testing hasn't been done. I am so sorry for you and your puppy!

Send these x-rays to the OFA for an opinion from them. Also go to an orthopedic vet for another opinion. Is his right hip totally out of the socket? What do the x-rays look like. Does he have remodeling of the femoral head on that side? Is there any DJD on that hip? Go to an orthopedic vet on this one. This pup might need a TPO on the right side, if the joint warrants it. Also if both of the parents were OFA certified on hips, they could still produce HD. You can breed two OFA excellent dogs together and get an entire litter of dysplastic dogs. The breeder needs to know who is a good hip producer and who is not.

He's favoring one side over the other because it's more comfortable for him.
Any dog can show signs of hip displasia at 8 months. Although hip displasia is generally thought of as genetic, it could have come from damage to his hips from his own physical activities. Does he jump a lot? Does he do weaving (such as in agility)? A growing puppy can get hip displasia from such activities.
If you don't accept your vet's diagnosis, take him for another opinion.

Since I'm not a vet I don't want to go too far it could be possible. However, if the person was more of a hoarder I would contact the local humane society so they can investigate them. Otherwise it could be possible some how the puppy got a broken leg or a fracture. She needs to bring the puppy to the vet ASAP for a general check up, vaccinations and to have the vet look at the leg (which will probably need xrays).
