John to take care of her

The disciple whom Jesus loved, John.
Jesus was the eldest son. Sounds like he was completely dedicated to the Lord and was like a brother to him. He must have been qualified to take the responsibility or else Jesus wouldn't have passed that on to him in complete trust knowing he would obey the order/request because he loved Jesus. He left following John the Babtist as soon as John knew who Jesus was. Definitely he had a heart that was looking for and believing in the truth and the Messiah and one of the first to recognize it and to forsake all and follow Christ.
As relating to Jewish customs, I am not quite sure the reasoning behind that but I would like to know!
" ...he is the only apostle present at the crucifixion, and who is asked by Jesus to care for his mother, Mary, as a son (John 19:26, 27)."

He entrusted the care of His mother to John.

We have to assume that Jesus had no brothers or sisters, otherwise one of them would have taken care of Mary.

John, because Jesus was her eldest son which entrusted him with certain duties regarding the care of his parents, since it is assumed Joseph was dead, He then appointed John to take His place because John was "the disciple whom Jesus loved" or in contemporary English, His best friend.

St. John..."the Disciple whom Jesus loved". So he could take her to his own home and care for her. He did. It is believed that the Blessed Virgin died in the Apostle John's home in Ephesus.

The Apostle John. He was the youngest and apparently the closest to Jesus. Christ said while on the Cross. "Woman, bhold thy son....son behold thy mother..........." He intrusted Mary to John so that she wold have companionship in her "old" age.
