It sounds completely unsanitary, I wouldn't do it. Lots of cat litters contain clay and other things that "clump", I would assume that by washing the litter box in the dishwasher all that stuff could clog up the works.

Try moving the litter box gradually, so it is not such an obvious change. Is there a reason you actually need to move the box? Put a new one in the basement, with some of the "old" used litter, so he knows his scent! Keep the original one in the same spot and he may eventually start using the one in the basement. The other suggestion is to keep litter boxes on each floor, so the kitties don't get lost looking for the new one! That is better than having accidents! Another product that works quite well (and better, to a friend of mine!) is a product called "oxiquate". If you can't find it, it can be ordered online. type that into search and you will get the website.

I dont think that it would be very safe at all! The litter tray would probably break in the machine which could break your dishwasher! It also wouldnt be very hygenic for you to use with your dishes because there would be traces of urine and it would have germs in it as well. Hosing the litter tray is okay and poor disinfectant in it to make sure nasty germs are gone. You can buy a cat litter tray liner which saves effort and leaves the tray clean. The litter tray liners are also scented which makes it smell heaps better!

You may have to run the d/w several more times to get rid of germs. As far as "waste", it will eventually be cleaned out too. But I would be concerned about the clay particles from the sand.
You may want to run something through like a cup of vinegar each time you do a cycle, like I said, with no dishes just to clean things out. But you'll have to keep an eye out in case the water lines get plugged. I would not run it while you're not home. Not for a very, very long time.
Next time your wife could just boil some water and pour it onto the EMPTY catbox, outdoors, to sanitize it. And use one of those pet enzyme products too.
GOOD LUCK!

That doesn't sound clean at all. If I wear you I would get some heavy disinfected and scrub the crap (litterly) out of that dishwasher. And next time make sure you're wife does it the right way even if it is the harder way.

i really don't think that she should do that it is very unsanitary, and you are going to need to run that dishwasher about 10 more times before it is sanitary to use again. Maybe you should get a new one!!!

I would say no to using the dishwasher again if I were you. It may have ruined the working order of the dishwasher...not to mention the cleanliness issue..yuck!
Good luck!

Bad idea because you do not want to ingest what comes out of a cat. Some how bleach the inside on the washer. If you can wash it in your tub, this is better and easy to clean afterwards.

yuk,i hope there were no dishes at the time.
if you want to clean it take it in to the yard and hose it off with soap and water
but if you live in an apartment wash it in the bath tub then sterilize the tub with comet, that's a little more sanitary then the dishwasher
