The biggest favor you could do her is to take her aside privately and tell her that she has the aroma of a three week old corpse.
Before you do this however, see an attorney about preserving some of your assets through the divorce; wear complete body armor, and run like hell after you say it.
Seriously, isn't it a shame that we can't be honest with those close to us. This is one issue, how about that of a friend or relative putting a 250 pound body into a 125 suit of spandex! This society disallows honesty in some areas, or specifically by males to females.

nope...have your spouse do it though. If she's offensive to you, she's offensive to others. It shouldn't come from you. She will probably be embarrassed. Better to be embarrassed in private from your daughter than in public when people won't come near you. It's possible she doesn't know she has an odor problem and you'll be doing everyone a favor by having your wife gently suggest there's a problem. The way you word the question makes me think you don't like her anyway so it's doubtful you could talk to her about it politely or with empathy.

Elderly people sometimes can't control how they smell. She might have something medically wrong with her like incontinence or chronic diarrhea. She might also be afraid to get into the bath tub because of a fear of falling. When we age our sense of smell starts to fail and people don't believe that they need to bathe as much. I would speak with your husband and see if there is some way he can offer to help. If her clothes are dirty maybe offer to do her laundry. They also sell bath tub seats and other medical devices to prevent slippage.
Maybe she needs to go to the dentist if it is her breath that stinks.
It really is a touchy subject and best if suggestions comes from your husband.

Yes there is a nice way and it would be better to have a lady to fulfill what needs to be done. Have the lady tell her it is time to bathe and if that is not good enough take her to a local doctor. It would be better coming from a woman than a man.

Give her bubble bath on all the occassions that come up.
Her daughter should also go to mum and say, "Mum, I don't know if you realize it, I've started noticing you are having body odor. I've noticed it whenever you come around. Is there anything going on we can help you with? Are you having incontinent problems? What can I do to help you?
Kind and honest is always polite.

You could be an a s s about it and tell her " Hey stinkbomb, You are horribly offensive." or be a good son-in-law and give her a lovely but needed perfume and body wash set. Trust me mother in laws are not people to make into your enemies.

Hey (insert mother-in-laws name), have you ever considered moving somewhere really far away, where they have lots of water?'

buy her gifts with soap in them and perfumes with body wash included. Little hints and she might like it so much she uses them.

If you can smell someone then they can smell them selves.Just ask her if her nose works .There is absolutely no reason that any one should stink.
