I posted a question but have another one. I had my abscessed wisdom tooth pulled today and was given a perscription for clindamycin hcl 300mg. I didn't want to take that antibiotic and finally convinced my dentist to perscribe erythromycin(?) since it is in liquid form. He told me that it was my mouth but what I asked for doesn't work and that I should be more concerned with the grape size abscess and bacteria than side effects. He said that the infection will spread to my brain if I didn't take the clindamycin. I don't want that to happen and am scared. I thought pulling the tooth removed the source of the infection but he siad it doesn't. If it helps I weigh 125 pounds, have taken antibiotics only 3 times in my life, and only take childrens tyenol (and its works great). I don't wnt anything bad to happen but i don't want the "cure" to kill me either. Help me please!!

Okay, I tried to take the clindamlcin and two bites of the pudding with it, I puked from the burning in my chest. I can't swollow pills and was told to put it in applesauce or pudding. Taste alone made me puke and now I have heartburn delight. Will eyryrothmycin get rid of the infection?

You need to take your antibiotic to remove the source of infection. Your dentist is right you can have serious health problems if this infection gets into your brain. It can cause your airway to swell leaving you incapable of breathing and you may well end up in the hospital. I have known of several instances over the last several years where patients have let a dental abscess go and they have ended up in the hospital very sick. I know of one case where a person died. Your dentist is not telling you a fib, this is nothing to play with. Since your teeth are so close to the brain, and the maxillary bone is so thin (the upper bone structure in your mouth) the infection many times can spread to your brain causing a brain abscess or worse. I am guessing that you are allergic to any penicillin products, because he prescribed clindamycin first and then erythromycin. Take your antibiotics until complete, the side effects, if any from your meds are small compared to what you may experience by having an abscessed tooth left unchecked. An infection anywhere in the body is nothing to play with the ramifications from having an infection without proper treatment can be deadly.

Why didn't u want to take that antibiotic? ... Are u allergic to it? , If not and there is no contraindications in your health history as to you not being able to take it, then follow your dentists advise. When u have a large infection and it has spread to the bone, removing the tooth removes the source of the main infection. Since u have so many bacteria in the socket, once u take the tooth out u sometimes depending on the case prescribe antibiotics to kill most of the bacteria present. The problem lies as the socket were the tooth came out of is healing, u want to try to minimize the chances of an infection during healing. This is very common especially when u have a large infection with millions of bacteria present. Clindamycin is a strong antibiotic, u may have an upset stomach, but ultimately is for your own good. Now if u start experiencing other symptoms, call your dentist. I am always happy to hear from my patients whether good or bad to make sure the situation is under control, hope this helps ...

The doctor know what antibiotics work the best for which infections. In your case, he's right. You need to take the stronger medication, and let's face it, you may be only 125 lbs but you need to take the adult dose in the adult form. Stop babying yourself and let the Doctor who went to school for a very long time, who you've already entrusted your dental health to by allowing him to do the extraction, do his job by taking care of your dental health. Nothing can help you if you can't help yourself. An abscess of that proportion is very dangerous and you are playing with your on health by not taking the Doctors advise. Also no, just taking the abscessed tooth out doesn't remove the infection. The infection is still in the tissue around the bone where the root of the tooth was located. It won't clear up on it's on. My suggestion would be to call and ask the Doctor to phone the prescription of his choice in to your pharmacy. I would probably do a little bit of apologizing along with it. If you don't I wouldn't be surprised if the next time you have a serious problem if he just referred you out to a specialist.

Tylenol does nothing for an infection. You need to take an anti-boitic. I suggest taking the erynthromycin and talk to your dentist in the morning to see if you can get a script for the clindamycin.
