I use it for tweaking an image before printing: correcting the white balance, dodging/ burning, removing high-ISO noise, sharpening the edges, resizing the image, cropping, etc.
Sometimes I use it for retouching: removing skin blemishes, whitening eyes and teeth, removing a distracting detail in the background, etc...
You can use it to convert a picture to black and white - possibly leaving one or two details in color...
And you can use it for all sorts of fun effects, like adding a UFO in the background, putting people from one picture into the scenery of a different picture, turning lamp posts into lolly pops, etc.
Photoshop lets you take a picture and turn it into whatever you want it to look like.

I like that last answer because it really answers the question. you can do just about whatever you can imagine. I love mine so much because people really go wow when they see the possibilities with photoshop I do all those things and then some. you can also take the pic.s after fixing them and put them onto a dvd slideshow with audio ect. and its really fun. so have fun with it

photoshop 5.0?? wow.. that's like last decade software! i hope you didn't pay anything for it! there will be photoshop CS3 (10.0) pretty soon..
you can do tonnes of things in photoshop! it's one of the most powerful and widely-used software in the planet! i use it almost everyday, also for professional tasks.. fyi i work as an architect
a friend told me that it's the greatest human invention since wheel :)
