If a customer wants to bring back a med they don't want or didn't use, I just tell them to keep it, because they would just do the same thing we do--throw it out. In the pharmacy, we're not allowed to take back a drug that has left the pharmacy, for reasons stated in other answers. If we do take the drugs back, we have to flush it down the toilet (I've never done the flushing though). As for drugs that are close to their expiration date (within 3 months), those get mailed back to our warehouse, and we get reimbursed for those drugs.

If a prescription is returned and the label is broken, then legally they can't reuse it. Anyone could have tampered with the ingedients, causing it to be harmful and deadly to a person. They send the meds back to the company so that they can thouroughly inspect it and either put it back on the market or do away with it if need be. You woudn't want your prescription for Diabetes or your insulin to be something that was returned just because the company was concerned with the soil in the environment right? There is no reason to give it to the needy, because if they needed it, they would get a presciption. You don't want these meds being given to needy homelss people who are just addicts and for some reason can't go to a doctor and get a prescpription. There is Plenty of health insurance coverage for those who can't afford it.

I don't think they are allowed to reuse them again. I would be shocked if they were. They could have been tampered with. And they would not just give them to the needy without a prescription.

I believe they return them to the drug companies.
But you might out the answer on my favorite site, Google.com or ask.com
Or your local drugist might be willing to tell you since it's for a class project

I think they destroy the tablets and clean the materials and use it for other things.
