I don't smoke by the way.
I've now been to the doctors and she said it was just a cough, and has prescribed a cough suppressant.

This is called post-tussive emesis. It is a common problem of bad coughs. Just stay hydrated, and you should be fine as the cough improves. Watch if you are vomiting up blood, as this may be a serious problem which would require medical attention (sometimes the all the strain from coughing/vomiting may cause a tear where the esophagus and stomach meet which is called a mallory-weiss tear). If you notice blood, call your doctor.

Is it a dry cough? Do you have fits of coughing till you wretch? Have you had the cough longer than 10 days? If so I would get it checked out by the doctor. Don't put it off because you're worried about what it might be. You may need a course of antibiotics.
Inhaling steam for a few minutes can settle a dry cough.
Trouble is when you have fits of coughing it triggers the gag reflex and makes you try to be sick.
You don't say how old you are or if you smoke.
I once ignored a persistent dry cough for a few weeks...turned out I had pneumonia.

Its something that you probably should get checked out by a doctor. Bile gets added to the digestive contents just after it leaves the stomach, so you are vomiting up contents from below the stomach as well as the stomach.
What are you coughing so much? Perhaps you need to take some cough syrup/linctus to try and stop the cough.
If you have other symptoms as well (like heartburn/ diarrhoea/ constipation/ fever etc) you need to see your local dr.

See your doc to find out if you just have a bad cough or something else. This is how my asthma started, now when it happens I just puff on an inhaler and all's fine. This happens rarely nowadays. See your doc.
