When the religious leaders realized that Yahweh wasn't as easy to say and didn't roll off the tongue as easily as the monosyllabic "god."
Also by using the word "god" for their god, they're monopolizing the term. Zeus, Thor, Allah, and so on were all gods, but not "the" god. Having a name like god is like Microsoft coining the phrase "Personal Computer (PC)" it is a useful psychological framing effect. When you think of God or PC which do you think of? The christian deity and the MS computers.
There is a definite propaganda element in the use of the name to help establish that the only concept of a god is their vision of a god.

God is just a title. Yahweh is the Hebrew pronunciation for Jehovah which is the English pronunciation. God first told Moses this was the name to tell Pharaoh was the name of the God of the Israelites.

He didn't. Just some people are too lazy to look up their own deities name, so they call him "God" which is simply a title. It'd be akin to addressing a person as "Hey you" all the time.
