Not entirely. Religion is an excellent way to explain natural phenomena that adherents do not understand. Death is just one such mystery, there are also questions of origin ... like the origin of the sky, stars, people, etc. A religion can also give people the opportunity to commune with each other which is very important to a social species like our own. A religion is often able to organize a community to attend to the needs of the community, like educating children, producing food, clothing and shelter. Religious adherents will be better able to answer this question more thoroughly than I can. I just thought I could toss out a few ideas.

I don't think so. I think the purpose of any religion is to promote peace and brotherhood. They all strive to make people better than they think they can be.
