My 9 yr old is constantly talking about I Pods, MP3 Players, Cell Phones, and how this person has $-- AND he actually expects us to buy these things for him. Do you any of you seriously have a 9 yr old/4th grader with these high tech pricy items and if so, WHY?

Maybe I should add that my son doesn't use the home phone for more than 30 minutes total a month, so I don't get the point for a cell phone! He also tells me that so and so has three cell phones, who needs 3? It's just so materialistic!

He's a classic outdoors boy. I don't have an I Pod or MP3 Player either. And he's almost never far from home alone.

RIGHT ON! What the hell is wrong with people today? A child that age needs any of those things like s/he needs a hole in the head. This is why we are so devoid of values in our society. Gimmie, gimmie, gimme is all we want and it starts earlier and earlier. Grand for you that you aren't stupid enough to play along.

I don't think they need all that at that age. Our school district (its a small rural town) does not allow the kids to bring these kind of thing to school.
I would buy him what you can easily afford. Even if that is just a portable CD player or something like that. And also, only give it to him for Christmas, birthday or special occasion. Even maybe as a reward for getting good grades in school because he isn't distracted by the use of IPods etc.

Well I don't have any kids of my own, but my aunt has a nine year old son who is absolutely h**l bent on having the newest electronic gadget that comes out. so far he has 2 ipods a new razor phone and is screaming for the newest gaming station that came out, I don't know which one it is but as far as I'm concerned a nine year old does not need electronics that cost more than his or her weekly or monthly allowance. I think that the reason that people buy these things for there kids is to keep them happy even if it is only for 5 minuets. It all comes down to little kids thinking that they can get away with bullying the parents by being little monsters.

My daughter is 9/4th grade: we just gave her a cell phone that is prepaid (its one of my older phones). We did it for emergencies. She is a very responsible kid though. She's had the phone for 2 weeks and hasnt used a minute yet. Her grandfather just bought her an Ipod Nano (I have no idea why)
The reason we gave her a cell phone is because a local girl was kidnapped and was able to use her cell phone to call for help a couple months ago. I told her is she uses up her her minutes she has to do extra work to pay for new minutes.

I completely agree with you. There is no reason that children should have these things at this age. The ones that do are going to be the same ones that get brand new cars and wreck them when they turn 16. If your child really wants something, make him work for it. That is what we have to do. Good to teach now rather than later. Keep up the great parenting!

My daughter isn't that old yet but if she was we would get her an i pod its really no different than a cd player except far more easier to use.

Because everyone has them, to him. He thinks it is essential because everyone has it, Get him a pay as you go phone and make him pay for the minutes. You could also get him a shuffle or MP3
