If you have downloaded any software that is written in Python or uses Python's libraries, then you may need it to run those programs.

Python programs are not compiled, so they need to have the Python interpreter around in order to work.

Well, Python is a programming language. Either it's a Python compiler/development kit or it's a program that doesn't have a name.
