I read somewhere about something you can put in them to ease off the gas, but I forgot what it is. Help, please.

Several things. First, boil the beans for a little while, then let them sit overnight. Pour off the soaking water, and replace it with fresh. Addding half a teaspoon of baking soda to the cooking water will also help.

Watch how you season the beans, too. Although onion and garlic are delicious with pintos, they can add to the fart factor, too. Sautee them lightly before adding them to the beans.

And if all else fails, haul out the bottle of Beano!

I wouldn't put anything in the beans themselves...
I've been eating a lot of brussels sprouts lately (YIKES!) and had to ask my expert at the health food store what I can do for the gas...I was expecting an answer like Beano or digestive enzymes...he told me to put a pinch each of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger in water and drink it! He just told me night before last and I haven't tried it yet but this guy went to medical school and then started studying herbs and supplements 30 years ago and I've been going to him for 15 years for this kind of stuff...if you try it let us know how it works!!

Add a bit of baking soda. That will neutralize the "tooting" agent in beans.
