There are ways to get help without being placed in a hospital, but they both involve seeing a doctor. There are some drugs that will lower your anxiety levels. Talking to a psychologist is another way. They can monitor your stresses and teach you about behavior modification.

You're not alone in this. There are lots of people with problems like yours.

Try to join a on-line group or see if there are any local meetings in your area. Sometimes it helps to talk to other people experiencing the same problems you do. Check out http://boards.ivillageshealth.com (scroll down to self-injury)

There are several different theories to explain self-mutilation:

Self-mutilation is an outlet for strong negative emotions, especially anger or shame, that the person is afraid to express in words or discuss with others.

Self-mutilation represents anger at someone else directed against the self.

Self-mutilation relieves unbearable tension or anxiety Many self-mutilators do report feeling relief after an episode of self-cutting or other injury.

Good luck, you can overcome this!

I have a friend who was a "cutter" and had some other issues going on. She got some therapy and took anti-depressants for a while and she no longer cuts herself. I am sorry that you're having troubles - been through it myself. Try seeing a therapist, it helped me tremendously. You do need help and it sounds like you're ready to get some. Be brave and ask for the help now. I hope that everything works out for you.

listen to jasandjeff...what they said is the best advice youre going to get!

i used to cut and it's hard to stop but you CAN do it. look at the majority of the replies here, they're all supporting you in some way or another! you need to be able to believe in yourself more, and please go see either your own doctor or the outpatients part of your local hospital. it's scary to think about doing i know, but they will help you and not all doctors are bad scary people.

i'm wishing the best for you and i hope you find a personal peace and have a happy great life! it IS possible!

I am so sorry...it took guts to admit this, even here. You are in pain as you said and you are causing yourself more pain by doing this destructive behavior. There is help for you...tell someone to help you. If it means going into residential treatment my friend, then take that course of action. You cannot continue to abuse yourself in this manner. There are many people who care for you and love you...you are going through a rough patch right now, and life does have better things to offer you, when you are back to a right state of mind. I hope for you all the good things!

hospital might sound like crap but it can give you a break from the outside world which you might need. I remember when I first started cutting my family freaked out about it. Its better to tell the docs because they have seen it more and know how to deal with it.

I am 31 yo and I just realized after 15ys that my best friend was a cutter in highschool. Everyone around me knew except me. It makes sense though. Her sister died from cancer when she (my friend) was just 12yo. Her parents mournded so much that they forgot about there living daughter. You need to see a doctor about this, because it only takes one bad cut to be fatal.
They can't lock you up for this, but talking about it to a professional can help you to stop. Besides, they leave nasty scars. Please stop and get help.
