I disagree completely with the person who told you to "skip Rome".
Rome "The Eternal City" has a 2700 year history, and has the remains of the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, art in museums and Church's, the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, lots of squares for people watching, the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and many other fountains, great food, the Appian Way, the catacombs, I could go on an on. I have been there twice the second time spending five days there and would go back as there are still many things a haven't seen or done there. Florence, on the other hand can be "done" in two days. From a historical and artistic perspective, I can think of few cities in the world that compare to Rome.
This question would fit better in "Travel".

I love the fact that it's close to Florence.
Skip Rome. See places like Florence, Lucca, Tuscany. These are beautiful places full of romance and adventure.
Rome is just another big, crowded city. (with a couple major tourist attractions)
