I have been diagnosed with bi polar disorder now for almost 4 years and the medication really helps. so i would suggest he see his counselor/doctor so they can maybe see why he does not want to take the medication maybe it is the bad side effects, i had to change my meds like 2 times before we found the right one for me and the homework and school problems are just affected by the different stages of the disorder and they are worse with out meds. i do suggest you learn as much as you can about it though.

There is a reason he not taking his medication. That is, he probably does not like the side effects. So, my suggestion is finding a medication that he can live with and everyone can live with. There are several, but you have to tell him that it takes at least a month for the side effects of each medication to go away and the longer you are on it, the more normal you feel. A good psychiatrist should be able to minimize side effects.

I've known 2 bi-polar people and the one thing I know is that they MUST take their medication. Both the bi-polar people I know have completely ruined their lives when they stopped taking their medication (one lost her children and became homeless and the other person lost his job of 20 years and became homeless). I can't stress enough how important that medication is.

The first thing that you should to is learn as much as you can about it. If you don't, you probably won't get anywhere. Here is a good website. it explains alot about what is and the treatments that you could possiably use. Good Luck!
