Remakes even would be helpful even. It should be somewhat hip-hop but not overly hip-hop.

Maybe you would like something like les Negress Verts, Les Nubians and Francis Cabrel. The two first have a rap/reggae style and the latter is basically pop music. It is not exactly hip-hop, but I hope it was somehow useful.

I don't know much about French music, but you could look into MC Solaar for rap. It's more of "old school" rap than current.

From what I understand, Manu Chao falls under rock, but he is influenced by salsa, reggae, ska, and other genres. In stores, I've only ever seen his CDs in the Latin American music section, but he was born in France and he does have French songs.

Louise Attaque and Cali are both more alternative-popish than hip-hop, so I don't know if you'd like them.
