I'm starting wonder if it's just that the situation in this country has gotten so dire that there's just nothing to be happy about. Jobs, education, culture, it's all a load of depressing rubbish and there's no possible decent future to look forward to, so really I'm wondering if I'm just having a completely normal reaction to a really depressing situation. Does anyone else feel like this?

One more thing (Columbo style) I've felt like this for about 2 years now, it ain't the weather, trust me!! Oh, and I know people go through terrible things in other parts of the world, it doesn't make me feel any better. Things are just stupid and poxy here.

Yes Leah I don't think the weather helps either. I usually get down this time of year just because of less sunlight-and wet days. But Blair and his mindless puppets appear to be dismantling civilised society step by step and he doesn't appear to care or even notice what is happening. He will probably get a job in America at the end of his term and leave our children to reap the rewards of his mistakes.
We need cheering up-its no use me talking about the many things at fault. Time to think about booking a holiday somewhere warm. My pal has just gone on a Nile cruise for two weeks. Lucky fellow.

You need a change of environment and a rest. Try and focus on the psoitive side of life and less of the negative. Life has to have a balance in order to progress.

It seems that everything around you is giving you negative vibes just now which could be due to the time of year. January is notably a depressing time for most of us and especially if you feel that you are banging your head against a brick wall.

All the best and life is really just a bowl of cherries, but often it is not wise to cherry pick the best but to take the sour with the sweet.

SAD Seasonal Affective disorder.... buy a sun box or lamp helps big time with the blues. Just think only about 13 weeks until the Easter hols.

Take a break from your studies and get out and about for a wee while if you can. Try not to take life so seriously as it can damage your health big time.

And I know how you feel believe me I do,only yesterday I was ready for chucking it all in but here I am today fighting your corner. So you are not alone in how you are feeling, it's a matter of how you can rise above the shite that is handed out to us all these days.

EDIT Maybe you should stop feeling that you are a cut above the rest and go and do something worthwhile with your time. For an example take on some volunteering for the homeless. You need to get some priority into your life.

In retrospect - how do people in developing countries cope with such unimaginable suffering and torment?
Places in Africa and Asia, even in Europe, Canada and US have places that are so hellish and substandard to living conditions (according to our middle class mentality).

The thing is - people in these places still find happiness and meaning.

I'm a practicing Christian - but not only that - I practice optimism. I cannot save the world - it'll take everybody to do that. So, I live with the mentality of affecting the system around me so that it affects the systems outside it. I live to make someone I care about smile, laugh, think... and it's my hope that they'll pay the favour forward - that's exponential goodness right there!

I was stupidly emo a while back... "Why?!!!" "Why live?", "What's the point if it all in vain?"
Then I realized that reality will not wait for me.

Everyday – I try to practice optimism; finding out what I love doing and doing it; practicing gratitude; doing even the smallest gestures to help someone out; smiling.

No – I am not a sugar-coat-everything kind of guy. I am still affected by the harshness of the world, but I use positivity and optimism against adversity.

Every small sliver is integral to solving the whole problem. I need to fix the problems within me and my immediate system (family, relationships, work etc.) before ever embarking on solving problems of the world. Search and judge within self before searching and judging others!

I'm closing the gap being closer to 40yrs. Just started at college to do a higher education course, enabling me to hopefully start university on a nursing degree next year. Made loads of new friends, having a ball, plenty of new and exciting experiences, which i cant ever remember feeling like this with school. But if your in a rut, try something totally out of the norm for you. You never know you may enjoy life again. Or go to the doc's you might have SAD! Its nearly summer again, dont worry. Be happy. x

i think feeling peed off with things is all dependent on where you are in life at a given time

7 years ago i was having the time of my life i was at university with not a care in the world and a busy social life...and this country was just as poxy then as it is now...i think!!!

now ive bought a house and am constantly watching the pennies, dont see my friends as often and just seem to be living hand to mouth

but i do think that we have become more insular as a nation and the explosion of the internet has a lot to do with that....as a nation we have definately lost our soul, we are bombarded with quick fixes and the idea that in order to get on in life you have to have a couldnt care less attitude for anybody else but yourself...

you're right the future does not look bright....so what are you going to do about it???...you got a masters for godsake!!!

I think a lot of people are just spoiled. They think the should be living the high life and complain when they don't feel like Paris Hilton. They do nothing to better themselves, or improve the world around them. If you're so annoyed with the world, why don't you try to change it?

At times i am sure everyone feels the same but with the negatives their is positives. I live half of my life in my own head lol. I guess thats my way of dealing with the social factors that surrounds us but u always find some with more to worry about than urself and it puts things in prespective

No it is not the situation, its you.
There are examples of people in the most depressing and distressing situations who have been as happy as larry, and vice versa.
Situations don't make people depressed. People get themselves depressed.

What is wrong with Prosac? Try another antidepressant.
