The climatic averages for Cairns are here:
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_031011.shtm

In March, the mean daily maximum is 31.5°C and the minimum is 23.0°C. The median rainfall is 376mm.

You can get tropical cyclones in Cairns in March and one year they had 1127.5mm in the month - which is about the annual average rain for Sydney.

Early march is really the start of the tail end of the Wet. Daily teps lurk around the 30 odd degrees celsius mark while huimidity sits at around 90 or so percent. So that makes it hot and wet.

March is also in the Cyclone season and we have had a few big ones in the surrounding areas in recent times, Cyclone ingrid and passed to the north and cut the cape near Coen and Larry took out Innisfail. Both were of the strongest category, 5.

If planning a holiday up in the tropical north, I would probably recommend coming in the May / June period, the bulk of the tourists arrive in June / July and the town really livens up.
