I like the name Guido (prounounced gwee-doh) for a tough dog. Sounds like a name a mafia soldier might have, but soft enough to be a good pal.

Maybe try MTV-my kids watch it and some of the new pop artists have "gansta" names--might work--try imdb.com-look up old mafia movies-hope I helped :O)
