what I would recommend is that you go to a real pro shop. I use to work for Bass Pro and well they don't always have the best prices nor the smartest people working for them. If you go to a pro shop, someone will give you more attention and help you pick the right bow for the right price, not the most expensive bow for a the wrong price. Learn as much as you can about the bow, BEFORE you buy it. Check out field tested reviews by non-pro archers or archery companies. Join an archery forum they can help you a lot when it comes to choosing your first bow. As for price $400 - $800 is a good price the martin Bengal is about $400, It's a good price bow and is still has all the bells and whistles plus the extra money saved form buy it, you can buy accessories, like a rest, sights, and other things that they recommend.

I would go compound. As far as how much to pay, depends if you're looking for a bow to hunt with or to shoot competition with. For hunting, I would expect to pay $400-$600. For comp shooting, more like $600-900. If you're looking for hunting, Bass Pro is an exccellent choice, though they don't carry an extensive assortment of manufacturers and models. Look at their house brand, Matthews, High Country and Bear. Look at Hoyt if you're shooting comp. I noticed one user claims they don't always have an experienced staff, that may be true - just try to corner one of the older gents or ask the associate what they shoot and how long they've been shooting - that should weed out any posers. It's not difficult to "fit" a bow to someone. You just need to know their strength level and 'pull' distance, which is easily measured and Bass Pro can do it.

Yes.. Bas Pro Shops will fit you for a bow to fit your strength and stature. Obviously a compound bow is the way to go and the quality varies greatly depending on how much you have to spend. Go to their website and check out the prices and go into the store prepared. Don't forget all the goodies such as a harnass and arrows.
