besides a Phillipe's french dip?

I agree with first answer about bringing something to drink, always a good gesture, if they drink.

If not, then something that will make your stay more comfortable that they can keep.

I live in Alaska and have guests a couple of times a year. They either bring something some kind of food special from their area that I can't get here. Or, they buy a big box of fruit or meats when they get here. It's a nice gift and helps with meals when they are here. I feel blessed that I have such thoughtful friends when they stay. Of course a good host will never ask their guests to pay for food, but a good guest always does.

IF he's into a hobby or interest how about a book on the subject. There are of course CDs DVDs and other things but a good book is something that is easy to pack does not take up much space.

Depends on how well you know him and what his likes/hobbies are. I have a friend who is really into reading I live in Michigan, he lives in California so I usually bring him a book when I go to stay with him. Usually a book on one of his interests....wine, cooking, birds, etc.....

Or shopping for and cooking a very nice dinner with a bottle of expensive wine is always a nice thing to do for your host.

Good luck, have fun.

Does he drink coffee? What about a pound of coffee? I work for Starbucks, and I will tell you, a coffee gift basket is wonderful! Here are some facts about coffee:

A bag of whole bean, UNOPENED coffee is good for a year.
A bag of whole bean, OPENED coffee is good for a week.
A bag of ground coffee is good for 24 hours.

Now, I still drink ground coffee after a week, and it still tastes the same to me. That is Starbucks standards, though.

Other suggestions:

Gift cards!
Those are always easy to travel with, and they are versital.

Why not make them a meal, or take them out for dinner?

Candles are always good!

Hope this helps!

Do you know if he likes to read? A book travels well, or a DVD. Gift cards are obviously easy, but I hate them b/c they are so impersonal. A coffee table book on a subject he is interested in might be good.

What does he like? What are his favorite foods? Is theer a candy or some product they don't have where he's at? ( I know you can buy anything under the sun online, but it's always fun to get something from somewhere 'because they don't have it here'!) Maybe a book? Anything, really.

A considerate guest is the best host gift. ;)
Treat the friend to dinner one night, leave your sleeping area cleaner/neater than you found it, and be respectful of the house rules.
If you want something gift-wrap-able, try a book/CD/movie you know they'd enjoy.

Perhaps a gift card to his favorite store and an offer to buy dinner.

I would have to say, something that you know that he would like. What does he collect, if anything? If you don't bring him something, maybe taking him out for a drink (depending on how old you are) or a dinner would be appropriate.
