I got an e-bay account a while back for no reason. I wasn't going to buy anything. But as a joke I made a bid. It wasn't real and I thought someone would bid above me. It was a low bid. Anyway, on January 21, I received a message from the person whose item I bidded on. They said they sent me the merchandise a while back and never got anything back from me. They said if I didn't respond in 12 hours they would report me to e-bay and the local authorities. Help! I didn't mean it!
I gave a fake address and name. I don't want to be arrested for something I didn't even mean!
Can they track me?
I'm only a teenager! I make mistakes! I act stupid!

I haven't used the e-bay account since I got it. Please help! Will they be able to find me?

I don't have the password to my account anymore, and I would pay for it, but I don't know whether they will arrest me or something!

No, I don't have the merchandise.

LOL I just checked my e-mail and have received at least 5 e-mails from "E-bay" about something. But I only bid on one item, and all the e-mails talked about a different item. One of them even said THEY had sent ME the money and I hadn't sent the merchandise. I never even auctioned anything! Now I feel stupid. It was obviously a scam. Thanks to everyone (except the people saying I should pay it and it serves me right)

You scammed a scammer! E-Bay notifies you when you win a bid and notify you again and again until you respond. Sellers don't send merchandise without payment. You are being scammed. Report it to E-bay immediately and ask to have your account removed. You did nothing wrong, just misleading.

don't sweat it, there is nothing they can do. They have to prove you received the item (which you didn't so they cant). the only Way to do this is require a signature for delivery of the item. Did you sign anything? NO. It is just an empty threat Besides, it is the seller's fault if they were stupid enough to send you something before you paid for it.

There are no enforceable laws in place to back up an eBay bid. The worst thing that can happen is you will get an unpaid item strike on your eBay account. Get too many of those in a short time and eBay will close the account.

And no law enforcement agency anywhere is going to take the time to track down one non-paying bidder from eBay. The cops have better things to do.

Finally, if you are under 18, any contract you entered into is unenforcable no matter what. Minors cannot be held to the terms of any contract.

Somethings not right here at all. I buy stuff on Ebay all the time and 1) items always have to be paid for before they are shipped and 2) If payment is not received in a timely manner you will be notified and 3) You are notified when you win the auction.

Yes you can be tracked down through your ip address. Is they any chance the ebay person knows it was a joke and is trying to get back at you?

It states right on ebay that a bid is a contract and by bidding or buying something out right you are agreeing to the terms of said contract. I hope you've learned you lesson and that you dont do this again.

You probably won't be arrested but I do recommend you fes up to what you did. Good luck.

For one thing, bidding on ebay is not a joke, this is how some people make their money and you cost a seller money by doing a fake bid. However, it was the seller's responsiblity to make sure they got payment BEFORE they sent you the merchandise, and since you never received the item you can't be held liable for it. Also, since you are underage, you can't enter into a contract with anyone and bidding on ebay is entering into a contract. So you need to do the right thing, send an email to the person and explain yourself and aplogize for what you did. You can't be arrested, but I hope you learned a lesson and won't do this again.

1)Bidding on Ebay is a legal binding contract.
2)Giving a false name and address can be fraud.
3)The seller would of not sent you anything without you first paying for it - unless they were morons.
4)Cancel your Ebay account - you have to be 18 years of age to have the account in the first place.
5)You can be tracked by your ISP no matter what false information you gave
6)If all else fails - report to Ebay you can't pay for the item due to financial hardship but the seller is after you for payment - an arbitrator will be put in charge of the problem.
7)Claim stupidity and try to grow up. Learning something -cause the second time someone will use the first time against you to show a pattern.

If you received the merchandise return it via post office or UPS and make sure it is returned asking for a receipt. Insure it for what you would have paid for it. Don't worry they can't arrest you. Along with the merchandise include a letter (copy to held by you in a safe place) that explains that this was ordered by mistake.
You'll be OK. But do not keep the merchandise otherwise they can accuse you of all sorts of things.

No legit seller would send the item unless you paid for it first. Delete their e-mail and stop worrying. Do not make contact. The worst they can do is report you as a non-paying bidder and give you one negative feedback.

Seriously, if other answerers don't know how e-bay works they shoudl not be answering your question. Tellling you to pay these people is irrisponsibly bad information, similar to they type of mistake you made. So at least you're not alone!

You are lying. No one at ebay is stupid enough to send someone merchandise without paying or at least a credit card #. Ebay doesn't open accounts without your correct cc# on file. if your info was false, how did they get in touch with you? All lies.

yeah i'm bummed too.. yet you recognize what i'm chuffed for Derek Fisher he advantages it and that i'm also chuffed for those unswerving die demanding laker followers accessible who're continuously cheering their crew on. It turned right into a strong sequence and that i'm unhappy that there is not any longer going to be any video games for awhile yet its all strong. Congrats to Phil Jackson for yet another championship (that is list breaking isn't it?), Kobe for triumphing MVP and to each and every of the followers! :D
