Since taking it religiously several times a day over the past three days, I've developed a BAD case of hives all over my body. My face is bright red, itchy, and inflamed. Hard to think of what else could be causing this but the Benylin, since this is my first experience with it and I've not taken any other new medicines or eaten any new foods recently. The side effect warning for Benylin says skin irritations are "extremely rare" but perhaps I'm just the unlikely .05% who breaks out in ugly hives with this cough syrup? Anyway, if you've had similar experience with cough syrups (of any type, but especially Benylin) I'd be very keen to know about them. Thanks.

Thanks everyone. Obviously I stopped taking the Benylin as soon as I saw the hives. This certainly isn't something I want to 'experiment' with to determine cause and effect on my face!

I've had problems with cough syrups before now. Mostly the "all-in-one" ones. I get crippling stomach pains after taking them and feel desperately nauseous.
The only one I can use happily now is Buttercup Syrup.

I developed hives the last time i took penicillin. I'd only taken them for 3 days but had the hives for 3 weeks! I ended up having to damp down some sheets and wrap myself up in them to try to cool my skin. It was a horrible time and I feel so sorry for you in what you're going through.

Guess the only thing I can do is stay away from the things I'm allergic to.

The first thing you should do is stop taking it now!!!!

If you continue taking it your symptoms could get worse.

You are obviously having an allergic reaction. You need to go to your pharmacist and show him your symptoms and he should advise you if you need to seek medical help.

It is important the next time your visit your doctor to tell him/her that you had a reaction to Benylin, as other drugs he may prescribe could contain the same active ingredient, dextromethorphan (which is in Benylin).

You may be able to take other cough syrups as they all do not contain the same active ingredient.

Wow... I just put in a package to my sister, who's overseas, a copy of "Mommie Dearest", because she cannot find it where she's at and some of her friends want to see it. I also have a copy and I watched it a few times... It's incredible, isn't it? Did you know the movie is based on the book Christina Crawford, Joan's daughter, wrote? Yes, that's real; and real events lived by her and her little brother under the same roof with their mother, Joan Crawford. Everything was taboo back then, all hush-hush, otherwise Joan Crawford would of been in prison for Child Abuse... It is just incredible what an adult would do to a child. Just... Speechless. But incredible is the outstanding performance by Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford. She was nominated for the Oscar as Best Actress that year, but she didn't win. Too bad. She was excellent.
