This is a fantasic rifle and you can get them right now on the cheap. They are as good as most 30-06 hunting rifles you would pay hundreds for and the ammo is really cheap too! I own one and love it, one of my favorites. Big 5 gets those all the time and sometimes will have sales for as little as $49 bucks. Get one, you won't regret the purchase, it's fun to shoot and would be a great hunting rifle as well. Oh, make sure you look at the barrel before you buy, most are in great condition but some have problems. My M44 is one of my most accurate guns and I added an aftermarket "Fiberforce" stock to make it a light weight little beauty. Far superior to the Mauser in my opinion. For what I paid for this rifle I'm still amazed and so are my shooting buds. They all love it!

Take at look at what this rifle can be transformed into here http://www.atigunstocks.com/product-mosin.html

You can also get scope conversions for them that are really nice too. You might want to get a gun-smith to do the coversion if you are not sure of what you are doing, but it's really easy. However, I have a background as a machinist.

I have quite a few Mosin Nagants and really like them.

They are simple, rugged, but still almost elegant rifles that shoot a very good cartridge that's close to 30.06 in ballistics.

If you are really target shooting and not just messing around, get the longer 91/30 for about the same price. The carbines tend to be a little less accurate as a whole, but the short one are a lot sexier. Better yet get both.

Some are very used and "counterbored". I would avoid these. Plenty have excellent bores. Look down the muzzle!

Buy ammo online in the spam can and save big bucks.....you can find it for 10 cents a round.

Wholesale prices. 91/30 and M44 plain wood stock about $65, Laminate wood $90, M38s $90. To this add $20 shipping and the cost of your dealer's transfer, so look for no more than $125. Big 5 and Dunhams have them on sale for $89 or so regularly.

I have 11 including a Tula Hex 1931 and a Model 91 (not 91/30)

Ok chances are your gun was made in the fourties, in Russia specifically to fight off the Nazis, yada yada. THESE ARE FANTASTIC WEAPONS. I have a Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper which is the big brother of your m44. The M44 is basically an M38 with a folding bayo. Honestly, I believe these guns to be one of the greatest of all time.

1- They're strong.
2- There's millions of them.
3- They shoot the longest serving military cartridge in history (still being used) which will drop surprisingly large game.
4- Mass production never hurt their inherent accuracy (because some modified rifles are shooting like customs)
5- NOTHING to break, you can even adjust the firing pin out if it breaks.
and 6- They're dirt cheap.

Anyone that sends these guns are crap can send me theirs. Please.
Anything else you want answered? Ask another question, if I don't know it (I probably do) I can find out no problem.

that is a great gun. We sell many of them. Most have great barrells all are good. It's the "little brother" of the 91/30 Mossin Nagant. It can be drilled and tapped and there is a bolt altering kit that be installed to sporterize the gun. I know many people that use them to hunt with. Ammo is realtively inexpensive and easily found.
