I did too. Raised a Catholic, I went to a couple of parochial schools, and left the religion when I was a teenager. I was not bitter, but I did feel that there was more to the whole spiritual thing besides what they had taught. I was agnostic for years, investigating many different religions and beliefs. I lived by a philosophy of my own beliefs, a kind of blend of all the good and what I believed to be true things of what I had found.
Years passed, but I still could not find that missing part, that feeling that there had to be more to it. I knew that the answers where not in the religions, though many had common ideals. I was amazed at all the different factions in Christianity, and started investigating them as well. I found most where about different interpretations of what was required to live the Christian life in accordance to the Bible.
I received a Bible as a gift from a girlfriend one day. I took this opportunity to investigate the core beliefs of Christianity, just has I had many of the others over the years. I thought I knew about it from the schools I went to, but I was wrong. It came to the point that I had either believe Jesus was who He said that He was, and that He did what He said He had done, or dismiss Him as just another great man or prophet. I decided to accept the possibility, figuring that I could just continue with my own beliefs if I found it not to be true.
That little bit of faith, stepping over that imaginary line, changed my life forever. I have had no reason to go back. I realized that the religions, and the people who were teaching me these things, meant them for my good, trying to lead me to know the living God. God proved Himself real, touching my life as He has millions of people over the years. This was not some imaginary hope, but an assurance and conviction that He simply is, that He exists. I found that Jesus is indeed the only way to God, the truth behind all the man made interpretations, and that He has made me complete, becoming my purpose and reason for my life .
He is as close as the mention of His name. I hope that the love of God touches your heart in such a way that you will have no doubt that He loves you, and wants that you would love Him of your own free will. Love, to be love, must be given, not demanded. That is why we have free will, and it is the purpose of our being. He is that missing part, the hole within our heart that only He, by His Holy Spirit, can fill. There is no other name, no other belief, by which we can come to know Him and be saved.
It's not about following a particular religion, only that you know and love God. I have found that the core belief in Christianity is the only path that will truly get you there. May God bless your journey.

My grandparents were brought up in very religious Eastern European immigrant families but had terrible experiences in Catholic school. That led them to keep their children out of the Catholic school system and they were sent to public school instead. Their kids still went through all that stuff like First Communion, etc. but over time, the family stopped going to church as often. My grandfather had some issue with the church in the 1960s which really pissed him off (money related). He was especially angry that his family had been through the Catholic 'system' and done everything 'right' yet were disrespected over a matter involving a 'donation'. He said he was done with the church after that and he was very bitter but he still believed in God, Mary and Jesus, etc..
Eventually, my mom put religion on the back burner too because her parents were bitter over stuff and she hasn't been to church since her wedding in 1968. They got so lazy about it that I was never even baptized when I was born and I was barely taught anything about the Catholic religion. Today, I'm more of an atheist but I have a little bit of a Catholic background.

Unfortunately many Christian private schools have turned people off of Christianity. There is a distorted view of Christianity promoted by many of the same people who promote Christian priveate schools. Before judging by them, why not give Jesus a chance? Study to see what Jesus was like in the Gospels. Try imagine Jesus doing or saying some of the things that turned you off in school? Probably can't, can you? Because Jesus is not like that.

is it wrong to feel negative towards almost all form of religion? don't get caught up in the liberal society of diversity and acceptance of everything. You do not have to ACCEPT other religions, views or belief. Sure you can respectfully communicate or respond with them but you do not have to compromise your views and become like them to be accepted. Be who you are. Love what you have learned and stand form. The world is full of deception and malice. Don't be mislead because you feel overwhelmed by not experiencing what others say you have missed.

first of all your stereo-typing christians so think before you speak and say "The Christian religion wouldn't be so hated if some of you people didn't go around prancing about how "this is a sin" and "you're going to hell" and "you are an immoral sinner" all the time." because im Christian and i don't say that "all the time", and in most christian/catholic faiths you are taught to forgive and don't hate anyone so i really think you should pick up a bible before you start saying all types of things about christians and the christian faith cause even though it isn't your faith you would be able to understand the christian faith more. Also your comment about the school in California how does that one group of people sum up how all christians think and believe in? Guess what, it doesn't

Who can blame you? The church has been wrong about so many things over the years that if written down it would fill a large stadium! In fact, the church turned me away because of its lack of appreciation for scientific fact.

Please explain to me about your school, and what exactly they taught? E mail me! I am a born again christian and have never been rubbed wrong by christianity- for I know there are many out there who claim to be walking in the truth and are not- we are to be aware of this. That is why I am curious to know exactly what this school taught?
