Way back when people believed this idea there was no space shuttle or satellites. The Earth is not and was not flat.

Its a myth to think that most people thought the world was flat. From the time of the ancient Greeks, there were many people who thought that the world was round. Even Columbus thought the world was round, the notable thing about him was that he thought that Asia was closer to Europe, because he miscalculated the circumference of the Earth, whereas others thought of it as being excessively far.
