My roommates dog recently started urinating in his kennel and on the floor. Sometimes it is mass amounts, sometimes just a little. He even appears to be urinating in his sleep. At first we thought it may be a behavioral issue as I recently moved in with my dog, and the pack dynamic has changed, but it has been almost 4 months and the situation only appears to be worsening. He has taken the dog to the vet and there is no indication of an infection. If he is urinating in his sleep I don't see how it can be behavioral unless he is dreaming. He has tried feeding in the kennel to associate food with that area, and has even cut off access to water after a certain time of day. It still has not helped. I have researched dog incontinence, but he does seem to be able to hold it if he chooses. At this point I am at a loss of what could be causing the issue. He is a somewhat nervous dog, but I am certain there is no abuse. Breed is Border Collie 3 years old.

It sounds like the dog has diabetes. I have a dauchsund that is 12 yrs old and started having accidents wetting in the house and his bed when sleeping. He also was drinking an unusual amt. of water.

The vet tested him for diabetes and he now receives insulin injections twice a day.

He still has accidents even in his sleep.....have your vet test him.

My email is brad.michelle@sbcglobal.net if you have more questions.

Ok, if you know he is not sick that is good. I can't tell you the reason his is doing this but I can give you some advice to deal with the problem while you continue to find the reason. I have a chihuahua who marks his territory ALOT. He never askes to go outside. He is a rescue and has issues, blah blah blah...so now he wears a diaper! Oh, yes...don't laugh. If it were anyone else that owned him he would've been given away or beaten or who knows. But he is a happy, nearly well adjusted little boy who just happens to piss in his little diaper instead of every corner of the house. He wears a newborn size Huggies brand diaper wrapped around his waist. If your dog doesn't poop himself don't worry about wrapping it around his rear just his waist. You will have to twist the tabs around inward for the best fit. For a Border Collie I'm not really sure which would be the best size. You might have to rely on trial and error. Believe me, it will take alot of stress off of you and perhaps even the dog too. Also there should be an official dog version of this out on the market soon.

DO NOT cut off water - if the dog has a kidney problem, cutting off water will make it worse.

Did the vet run a full blood panel to make sure it's not an issue with kidney disease?

Also, talk to the vet about PPA and see fi that will help.

In the meantime, waterproof crib pads from the baby section at stores like Target can be a lifesaver on furniture...

I didn't know what could be happening until I found the breed. Gee, A Border Collie. Border Collies need ALOT of room. They are breed to run and hurd. I live in Australia, and the dogs get alot of room here. The reson the dog is urinating is because it is tence. I have had alot of experiance with Borders and see this alot. Urinating is a way for a dog to express.Nerves may have a roll in it aswell. As for doing it olnly in the Kennal, there are 2 options. (1) Buy a new Kennal, it may just be that one. (2) The reason he is doing this is because he is afraid that one of you are going to steal his bed. This may be his only possesion and is marking it as his own. Males are mainly prone to this behaviour.

Hope I have helped!

Go to a different vet. Second opinion is needed here coz your dog is doing this for a reason and if one vet doesnt know, there will be another that does. He's not 'marking his territory' if hes doing it even in his sleep. It could be anything, his kidneys, stones in his bladder. My border collie ***** had a similar problem and she had stones in her bladder the size of driveway chips. Go to another vet and see what they say.

Good luck

He just might have a problem with his bladder, or it might be weak. You can't tell that it is weak from looking at it though. From what you said, I think some tests should be taken and possibly a surgery if necessary. Good Luck and email me if you need more help. My friends dog had some of the same symptoms. :)

No indication of an infection...........does this mean you did blood work on him also to check everything out? If not I would do so. It could be his Kidneys.
