Hardwoods are deciduous trees that drop there leaves every year: examples of trees Aspen, Popular, Birch, Elm, Maple, Oak Normally these trees are shade-intolerant - requiring maximum sunlight.

Softwood trees are trees that are conifer and have needles and normally don't lose there needles except one species: Which is Larch or Tamarack species (Larix) which looses its needles every year like deciduous trees.

Softwood trees can be either Shade tolerant (can grow with minimal sunlight) or shade-intolerant (require Maximum sunlight)

Examples of shade-tolerant - Spruce (white, black, engelmann, sitka), Hemlock, Western Red Cedar.

Examples of shade intolerant conifers: Pine (Lodgepole, Jack, White pine), Larch or Tamarack,

It has nothing to do with being soft or hard; Hardwood comes from a tree with leaves. Softwood comes from a tree with needles. The 'softest' wood on the planet is 'Balsa', it's classified as a hardwood !

Hardwood trees are decidious trees, that is they are trees that shed their leaves, like oaks, maples, walnuts, pecans. Soft wood trees are coniferious, that is they are evergreens, like Pines, Firs, Spruces.
