We also have a Sony cam and I burn DVDs all the time. I use Windows Movie Maker on my Sony Vaio with Windows XP.
You create the movie with that software and then save it to your C-drive. It gives you the option to save to C-drive. Then in the next step you choose save as: DV-AVI (NTSC). Once your clip is saved (takes some time) you can then use that file from your C-drive to burn it directly to DVD - it will play on your regular DVD player.

videohelp.com has a LOT of tutorials for doing the conversions. Both Nero and Easy CD Creator (or whatever it is called now days) works good and will do the conversion for you. Just be prepared for a LONG wait, also make sure you have a lot of free disk space.
