I can only give you my experience as a classically trained singer.

Look on-line and you will find lots of different sites where you can learn this accent.

1. Determine if you want a "Standard" British accent or a "Cockney" (working class as heard in My Fair Lady") accent.

2. Actors/Actresses in preparing for parts use tape recorders to listen and re-listen to themselves as they practice.

3. Find a British speaking person who will work with you on pronouncing certain vowels correctly or a voice coach.

4. Voice coaches (check a university) will actually help you alter the formation of your lips, cheeks and inside your mouth to be able to form your speech into a particular dialect.

For instance: French people have much tighter control around their lips and mouth when forming their vowels. Because they develop a much more muscular embouchure, they have mistakenly looked terse or angry to some people because of the way the muscles tighten around their mouth. But learning how to hold your embouchure muscles is KEY to learning a good imitation of dialect whether it is for acting or pleasure.

Finally, I have listed some sites that are used by actors, impersonators and singers in hopes you can get started in your quest! Best of luck and most of all--HAVE FUN!!!!

It's like learning a new language. There are very many different British accents. You may not like the accent of the folks in Liverpool; it's not at all cool..

There are numerous accents in Britain, and many more in England itself if that's what you're referring to. I believe the proper English accent most people are accustomed to hearing in the states is a London accent. (althought I could be mistaken on that part.) Watch BBC America, British movies, etc. and try to mimic the accent that you hear.

You will find that the British accent you refer to because I suspect you are American is spoken by the rich bone idle aristocrats from a bygone age and a few crappy actors

99.9% of people in Britain speak different dialects and different languages. Britain is made up of 3 countries England, Scotland & Wales. The language of Scotland & Wales is a form of Celt/Gaelic and also English. Every county in the country as its own unique dialect, it is the same in your country and in every country in the world.

Why are Americans so ignorant about other countries cultures.

Stick a block in your mouth and then try to talk. Don't forget to stick your nose up in the air too.

I was just reminded...Their over-sensitivity and lack of a sense of humor.
