my little brother is taking karate (actually its called kempo) anyway...every time he punches or kicks his instructor has him yell KIA!!does anyone know what this means?

the yell (kiyap) is a psychosematic way in which martial arts forms enhance the power of a blow. There is nothing harmful about it, and the word has no meaning per se except as an accent on contact with a target. Think of it as a way that asiatic peoples grunt when doing heavy work.

It's a way of forcing air out of the lungs by tensing the stomach muscles, to concentrate power.

don't believe it' a actual word. i may be wrong. i believe it is used to push out air. Weight lifters use: ssssst to exhale weightlifting weights.
