Everyone should fear hell- that is a fact. BUT God knows your heart and he knows who truly loves Him and who truly believes the gospel of Jesus Christ and understands WHY there is a hell and its purpose. Many do not understand the gospel nor do they see hell as justice and judgment, for God is HOLY and JUST. No sin is in heaven, no one who has lived in sin without repentence or forgiveness through Jesus Christ can enter heaven, because Heaven is pure and Holy! The gospel is very simple....and its beautiful- one needs to hear it and receive it and know they have sinned against God as Romans 3:23 says: that we all have! And we all need Christ's forgiveness, that is why He died and rose again- to cover the sins of those who do believe, and who put their trust in Him- not only are the saved from hell and sin but they are sealed with the Holy Spirit as Ephesians 1 says and the Holy Spirit leads them into all truth....God changes our hearts, and gives us a clean heart, and a heart that wants to please Him. Because we love Him! He died for us! He took our punishment and then defeated death so we could live! How can anyone see that as rubbish? How can anyone say they do not deserve hell? We all deserve hell! But God, out of His grace has made a way for us to be cleansed- through Jesus Christ--- Praise and Glory belong to Him!! See Romans 5:8-9

If by "becoming a Christian" you mean getting saved...

Salvation is a condition of the heart, it's a true faith in God.

Fear:

from Greek. To acknowlegde, be aware of.

You may be drawn to a church for fear of hell, but true salvation is recieved through faith and repentance through Jesus.

no. I don't know a single soul that became a true Christian solely because they feared hell.

I would think it would be better to become a Christian for love, peace, joy, and compassion. I would think it would be better to become a Christian to be in the presence of the Lord, not from fear.

That is actually the reason many Christians became Christian. Afterwards, many find out why so many others follow Christianity: because they know God's love.

You wouldn't fear hell if you weren't being convicted of sin. The people that will end up in hell don't believe in, care about, or want to have anything to do with the concept of sin.

Well, if YOU {hypothetically} decided to hear, believe, repent, confess, and were immersed in baptism ONLY to Call yourself a Christian, And not REALLY be Christ-like (which is what a TRUE CHRISTIAN IS) Then you have only gone through the motions of becoming a Child of God and are not really a Christian.which means you are not saved............................................................We are to be doers and not hearers of God's word only.

We are saved by grace through Faith in Christ... if the Faith comes from fear or from Love, as long as is faith it works. God encourages us to choose Him but promising reward, and also by promising punishment. Not unlike with a lot of other situations in life. Your parents reward you for obeying or punish you for disobedience.. does it matter if you obey only because you dont want to be punished? Is it less valid than wanting the reward?

That decision is hell itself.
A Christian must be the one who consciously does the Will of God by practicing the divinely wise counsels of Christ.

Fear of Hell is the major reason for becoming Christian. Read the Chick tracts at www.chick.com if you don't believe me.
