Hey Realone,

Swyrich is my favorite site for this purpose, here is what it says about:
--- (this is a translation of Birdsong from the German Vogelsang)

Origin: German

Spelling variations of this family name include: Vogelsang, Vogelgesang, Vogelzang and others.

First found in Pomerania, where the name acquired a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Simon Vogelgesang, who came to Philadelphia in 1741. Johann Nickol Vogelgesang came in 1750; while Johann Vogelsang came to Winterhill, Mass. in 1777. Georg Vogelsang came to America in 1761 with his wife Anna Appolonia. August Vogelsang came to Texas in 1845.

It's most likely from England. Looking at USA census records, there was a John Birdsong in Greenville, SC in 1790. By the 1880 census there were 1,085 indexed. You can search that online for free at http://www.ancestry.com

I find it hard to believe all the Vogelsang changed their name to the English version nationwide. I don't think the name was a corruption from something else. In the 1930 census, only 2 Birdsong in the entire USA were listed as born in Germany.

It's a made up name, like Windsong or Heartsong, combining the words bird and song. It doesn't appear in any of the baby name dictionaries I checked online, and usually one of them will have a listing for an unusual name.
